Flysurfer
Over the years the main kites I have flown have been either Vio's or Flysurfers. It is simple really, they make outstanding kites. People moan that they are very expensive, and they are, but there is a certain assurance that comes with spending all that money in that you know you are buying a top quality product. Interestingly Flysurfer own many of the patents relating to depower systems and it is certainly evident as each generation of new kite emerges that these patents are being put to good use. The Extacy used an interesting ring system for the depower, doing away with pulleys although some complained that the kites suffered to much back stall. A good mod to get the 13m Extacy to turn much faster is to add a small 10cm adjuster, with knots every 1cm to the two center bridle lines that go to the trailing edge. When both lines are equally extended, or moved down a knot or two the brake effect in the center of the canopy is reduced, causing the kite to stall much less. In light wind the kite will turn much faster without stalling, although some of the 'pop' is gone in the jumps, in very low wind you don't need it anyway. The safety on these kites is also not great and a full kill system is much better. I use the Vio safety system on all my Flysurfers, the fourth line to a wing tip and running back through the center hole on the bar. This way you can either use a leash attached to the fourth line or connect it into a QR on the chicken loop for a single point connection. There will also be no problem at all with stress on the wing tip as Flysurfers are made to last. The image below shows this more clearly. The Pulse is the latest Flysurfer I fly and certain one of the most refined and well balanced kites I have ever flown. The depower, a basic UDS, gives the kite a great depower range and this in turn gives it a spectacular wind range, almost a one kite quiver.
